Eusmilus sp. is a large nimravid saber-toothed ‘cat’ from the Brule Formation of South Dakota. It was a powerful animal, about the height of a leopard. The lower jaw exhibits pronounced bony flanges. This unusual feature would have provided extra protection to the large sabers when their mouth was closed.
This particular skull is that of a sub-adult. The sabers are approximately 3.5” (9cm) long, with 1.5” (3.5cm) tips of adult sabers showing behind them. The sabers are the last tooth replaced before adulthood. Fossil remains of Eusmilus are rare.
Note: some portions of the original fossil may have been scientifically restored.
