Details

Mesohippus was an early genus of horse from the Oligocene. This three-toed horse reached a body size of about 2 feet (0.6 m) in height and 3 feet (0.9 m)  in length. Mesohippus had low crowned teeth that would have been well suited to browsing leaves from bushes and small trees, and is therefore thought to be a forest dweller. Its long tail was over 1/4 its total body length. An interesting note is that all known North American horses including Mesohippus had 17 thoracic vertebrae, while European horses had 18.

Our replica is produced from a nearly complete fossil skeleton (about 85%). It can be mounted in any natural pose… running, walking, prancing, rearing, or even as part of a grouped exhibit with a Hoplophoneus Skeleton. The head, legs, and tail are removable for easy shipping, assembly and storage.
