Details

Subhyracon is one of the genera in the Rhinocerotidae family (the family that includes the modern day Rhinoceros). They lived in what is now the great plains of North America, 29 to 39 million years ago. The Subhyracodon had a long body and would have been around eight feet long, and weighed in at about one thousand pounds when full grown.

Our infant Subhyracodon was quite possibly still only a fetus! Whether this rhino was stillborn or an early infant death we can’t say, but as it was an isolated specimen, we believe it was not with the mother much beyond birth.
