Details

Titanichthys was one of the largest marine predators of the Devonian, and among the first giant vertebrates to exist on this planet. Titanichthys has been found in marine sedimentary rocks of present day North America, Morocco, and Poland. Its fins and vertebrae were cartilaginous, much like its modern-day shark relatives. Only its large bony skull is preserved. It probably reached a length of four to six meters and was most likely able to feed throughout most ocean depths. With a wide gape and no teeth it probably fed on plankton, arthropods, and small animals while using its large mouth as a scoop or a vacuum, similar to the whale shark.

Black Hills Institute is proud to be able to offer this colossal ‘shark-like’ skull replica on a steel display base.

Great as a stand-alone piece or as part of a more complex marine exhibit.
