The terminal phalange on each toe is an ungual, a spade shaped bone, which probably would have had a keratin sheath. This ungual replica is probably from an adult Triceratops, and is from the left foot. This ungual has a very gnarly appearance, and has an incredible amount of detail. The original bone is in the permanent collection of Black Hills Institute.
This pes ungual is an excellent educational piece, create your own educators touch collection by adding a Tyrannosaurus rex STAN™ pes claw, Struthiomimus hand or pes claw, Edmontosaurus ungual, Chirostenotes claw, and a Tyrannosaurus rex hand claw for comparison!
